Hi and Welcome
I have been a financial adviser now for nearly 25 years, my career in finance began at the Leeds Permanent Building Society. Somehow I was hired as a floating Customer Service Adviser even though I couldn’t drive. I spent a few years cashiering and helping clients with bank accounts, personal loans and mortgages.
After the Leeds and Halifax merged I was recruited as a financial adviser in 1996, the training course was around 12 weeks and was pretty tough with many exams. Having left school at 16, studying for exams was a shock to the system!
I loved technical drawing at school and in particular engineering drawing which meant visualising an object in three dimensions. I found that advising clients on their financial plans just made a different use of the ability to view things holistically. During my employed years I worked all over West Yorkshire and the North West, dealing with clients from all kinds of backgrounds. I learnt a lot in those early years at the Halifax and subsequently at Alliance & Leicester, HSBC and latterly Skipton, not least the fact that if I was to deliver the service I wanted to that I would have to do it under my own steam.
So in 2013, I set up my own business. Initially I worked with a firm but quickly decided I wanted the control of my own destiny, so set up with Positive Solutions and I have never looked back.
Over the years I have seen ups and downs including 9/11, Iraq War, Global Financial Crash and of course COVID-19, events like these have taught me and my clients that investing is a long-term plan and you need to stay the course once you have set out on a journey.
I’m married to Alex and we have two cats MJ and Storm. We love eating out, listening to BBC 6 Music and travelling the world. When I’m not advising clients and businesses, I love riding my bike (yes those pictures are of me) around the lanes of North Lancashire and the mountains of Europe. I started riding in 2014 when I took part in a charity ride from London to Paris, this started a love affair that would take me to the Alps in 2018 and to the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Poland in 2019 where I finished 205th out of 209 in my age category!
